Koichi Tohei

Koichi Tohei was the founder of Shin Shin Toitsu Aikido (Aikido with Mind and Body Unification). When he visited the UK in 1978 Doshu Yoshigasaki held the grade of Yondan (4th Dan) and was his uchi-deshi. Uchi-deshi literally means “inside student” or “live-in apprentice”. It describes a traditional Japanese system where a student lives and trains full-time under a master. The seminar was attended by Philip Burgess, who is now Shihan in the British Ki Society.
